September 22, Day 1 Walgett - Louth

The Walgett terminal was covered in pictures of Mary O'Brien: a local famous for, among other things, being the first woman to fly a Lear Jet. Well done Mary. We were more interested in the toilet and the fuel and we didn't muck around. We all had our props spinning by 1140 and we were away no 3 to the A team at 1147. The leg to Louth 99 Kms south of Bourke on the Darling river was uneventful. We watched the soil slowly change from rich to passable to just getting by. But we got some photos of RCN as we passed alongside this time around. ISB was too far in front to rundown. We landed no 2 to the Freers with Dustin finessing the aircraft down because of the turbulent ground effect conjured by an increasingly hostile temperature. Time 1308. Flying time 1.5.

The strip was about a click from the town and so we headed off on foot down the highway. Things to see in Louth: 1) The fire station 2) the lady optimistically selling rubbish in a footpath sale in front of a gorgeous yellow climbing rose and a ratty house that was also for sale 3) the old post office 4) a sign saying Bourke 99 5) Shindy's Inn, the pub where we had a pretty ordinary lunch 6) a turkey & a dog the size of a horse 7) the bridge over the Darling & 8) the Darling river itself: for this was Lawson country.
